From about 1985 to 1996, there were virtually no piano and organ stores in the Philadelphia area that were dedicated to the Hammond Organ, both old and new. Servicing of the vintage organs was limited to a couple of private technicians or people claiming to be able to repair the older tonewheel organs. It seemed no one really understood how important the drawbar organ sound was in a Gospel Church service, let alone those organists that play a drawbar organ.
In February of 1996 Tom Tuson, left Hammond Suzuki USA and founded the "Hammond Organ Center." In April of 1997, the Hammond Organ Center opened its doors in Woodlyn, PA, in a small 900-square-foot location. Two-thirds of the location was for servicing, upgrading and rebuilding of vintage Hammond Tonewheel Drawbar console organs. The other third was for display of pre-owned, rebuilt and new drawbar organs.
In 2019, Tom retired and turned everything over to the employees when they founded Vintage Hammond Service, based in Wilmington, DE. Through retirement or one person's passing and the passing of two people, Vintage Hammond Service closed its doors in October 2024.
